 2017 Preview

W.S. Neal finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year W.S. Neal just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region one with a 2-4 region record.

W.S. Neal took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2011. The Eagles hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just three games which followed a 8-3 record in 2015.

W.S. Neal was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Eagles want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.5 points a game.

Since 2010, W.S. Neal has gone a combined 33-41. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 4A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, W.S. Neal has managed to compile a record of 152-129. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 4A and 148th in the AHSAA.

Doug Hoehn leaves W.S. Neal where he served as the head football coach the past seven seasons. His teams went 33-31 including a 2-3 record in the playoffs.

Andro Williams leaves Linden with a very impressive 110-23 record over the past ten seasons. Every team qualified for a playoff spot and none lost more than four games in a season. He will serve as the head football coach at W.S> Neal for the upcoming season.

Coach Williams' overall record as a head football coach in ten season stands at 110-23 (82.7%). His 110 wins rank 44th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Williams' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won five region championships.

The W.S. Neal Eagles will play in Class 4A region one during the 2017 season. The Eagles have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 72-44 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 4A and 14th in the AHSAA.

The Eagles will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season. W.S. Neal came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

Senior Marvin Maddox returns after rushing for 924 yards on 118 carries and scoring 11 touchdowns. On defense he collected 3 interceptions.

The defense returns Junior DE Rickey Samuel who registered 7 sacks for 18 yards in losses last season.

The Eagles open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Tallassee on Friday, September 1 at Buddy Taylor Field. Last year the Tallassee Tigers finished with an overall record of 9-4 and in second place in Class 4A region three. The Tigers lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Andalusia by a score of 51-7.

W.S. Neal and Tallassee have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 0-2-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2016 with Tallassee winning by a score of 26-21.

W.S. Neal returns 4A All-State Junior defensive lineman Ricky Samuel. He was named to the second team last season.
